Southern Gospel music as a genre of music, is considered to have had it's start around 1910 with the James D. Vaughan Company. Often called quartet music, Southern Gospel Music usually involves four part harmony with Christian lyrics that reflect a down home, country and family message. The tempo is usually upbeat reflecting a happy relationship between the Christian and their maker.
